Actually that current Ferris wheel is just a very recent replication of the world's first Ferris wheel, which was invented expressly for the Chicago World's Fair of 1893.

With typical Chicago shortsightedness, they chose the new invention, the Ferris wheel, over a larger version of Paris' Eiffel Tower, which was offered to Chicago by Gustave Eiffel.

The Eiffel Tower, of course, still graces the Parisian skyline. Chicago's original Ferris wheel was demolished and sold for scrap more than a century ago.
